No less than Her Excellency Gloria Macapagal Arroyo appeared before the graduating cadets of the Citizenship Advancement Training of the SSC-R High School Department yesterday, March 8, 2010.

Introduced by the newly-appointed Trade Secretary Jesli Lapus, madam president especially mentioned that she couldn’t resist the invitation not only because SSC-R is a neighbor but also it has brought significant marks in history (because of its world-renown Basilica), and in academic and non-academic performances being “NO. 1 IN THE BAR EXAMS AND NO. 1 IN NCAA”.

President Arroyo underscored the important role of the youth in preparing the country to be in the First World in 20 years. She stressed that education plays a key role in promoting equitable and sustainable development. On this note, she highlighted the unprecedented scholarship program for private high school and college students citing that almost 50% of high schools are enjoying government scholarships.

Meanwhile, CHED Commissioner Nenalyn Defensor disclosed that there are 636,581 total beneficiaries of the CHED Scholarship Program to date which translates to a budget of P6.5B.
