They are not really strangers to us because we enjoy them practically the whole day on TV. Koreans have spotted a place not only in the boob-tube but also in the hearts of a lot of Filipino televiewers. And last June 27, 2008 twenty-one of them invaded SSC-R Manila.

No…, not for koreanovelas please!, these noodle and kimchi oriented asians came here for a series of projects and activities benefiting the SSC-R and its nearby communities from June 27 to July 12, 2008.

Last September 24, 2008, the area of Pschology held an education trip to the premier mental health facility of the country, the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) in Mandaluyong City.

First year and graduating psychology students joined the trip and were accompanied by Ms. Ethel Cruz, Ms. Teresa Tubania, Ms. Merle Salmorin, the area chair, and the Sebastinian Psychological Society (SPS) officers led by their president Michael Sarno. It was a guided tour for the group to see the different facilities of the center.

Essentially, the tour was meant to make students become familiar with the whole NCMH set up and see, first hand, the condition of the patients who are confined in groups and in isolation. Exposing them to this scenario made the students realize the importance of hope and courage being essential attitudes in the practice of their would-be profession.

The Natural Science area held its NS Quiz Bee last September 24 at the HRM Coffee Shop. Participated by 24 students representing different courses, the contest was divided in three categories, namely: the easy round, moderate round, and the difficult round. Ten questions were asked in the easy round covering the subjects Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Environmental Science and Physics. The ten contestants were trimmed down to five as they advance to the difficult round. The said round concluded with only three contestants who were declared as first, second, and third placers. Following were declared winners: Gilbert Gatdula (BSHRM 3RD Yr)– Champion, Judyleen Iglesias (BSHRM 2nd Yr) – Second Place, and Joshua Sorreda (ABMC 1ST Yr)-Third Place. Certificates and cash prizes were awarded by Dean Evelyn V. Enejosa who was assisted by Miss Cristy tanedo, area chair of Natural Science.

The main thrust of the Area of Political Science is not only to provide knowledge to students but initiate curricular development that will facilitate students’ learning process and allow exploratory activities and experiences that will supplement knowledge acquisition through books.

In order to meet these objectives, the area organized an educational tour for students enrolled in Philippine History last September 19, 2008. This was spearheaded by Atty. Romualdo Francisco and Mr. Dante Torres.

Part of the tour itinerary was the visit to the historical sites such as the Biak-na-Bato National Park in San Miguel, Bulacan, where the infamous Truce of Biak-na-Bato took place; the Barasoain Church in Malolos, Bulacan which was the birthplace of the Asia’s first Constitutional Democracy and Convention of the First Philippine Republic, and the Barasoain lights and sounds which showcase the collection of Municipal antiques and priceless array of artifacts.

Finally detonating the heavy bombers for the loudest win ever this NCAA season, STAGS silenced the leader with 52-47 ending yesterday’s hardcourt bout.

Dislodging the early leader JRU who now takes the same position with SSC-R in the magic four , STAGS winning points came from Moconocido’s surefire free throws enabling a three-point advantage against the bombers whose score was nailed to 47 during the last few minutes of the fourth quarter.

Gilbert Bulawan was pinned best player as he netted crucial points during the third quarter while marking great and well-coordinated moves with Viray and Pamboy Raymundo.

This is the second time STAGS have scourged the bombers. The first match sounded the buzzer with 57-54 final score in favor of STAGS.

San Sebastian drew strength in beanpole Jason Ballesteros in the stretch as it humbled Letran, 76-73, yesterday to turn the Final Four race a little more interesting in the 84th NCAA basketball tournament at the Astrodome.

The 6-foot-7 Ballesteros provided the defense the whole game and then went to his offense by scoring nine of his 11 points in the fourth quarter to give the Stags their sixth straight win and seventh overall in 11 outings.

“He loves to block shots, rebound and play defense. But he can score points like that if the opportunity presents itself,” said San Sebastian coach Jorge Gallent of his 22-year-old center, who finished with 14 rebounds and three blocks.

The Ballet Manila’s recognition of Filipino’s grace in performing arts and Philippine’s diversity of culture coincided with the “Buwan ng Wika’s” observance of the country’s acknowledgment of the local language as part of its conglomerate heritage.

Last August 10, 2008, students of Humanities were delighted to the “HALO-HALO SUPREME BALLET” at the Aliw Theater, Star City Compound, CCP Complex. It featured young and talented Filipino dancers seeped in Vaganova traditions. The show was topbilled by the only Philippine-based prima ballerina – Liza Macuja.

The Sebastinians’ morale boosted in high ardor with this rare chance to witness the superb execution of stage by the Most Outstanding Alumnus in Arts and Culture during SSC-R’s 50th Foundation Anniversary in 1997. Osias Barroso has been connected with the Ballet Manila as the ballet master and the cut and thrust Prince of Liza Macuja for some series of performances. He has also done lead roles in both international productions of major full-length ballets. He became the first Filipino classical danseur to reach the semi-final round of the 1st international Ballet and Modern Dance Competition which was held in Nagoya, Japan in 1993. “Wow, ang galing talaga ng Sebastino!”, exclaimed one student.

Indeed, the Area of Languages and Humanities has proved than instruction can be extended outside the four corners of the classroom. The activities enhance and develop students’ multi-intelligence and establish good rapport among faculty members.

It’s a toss for an emerald year for the College of Accountancy, Business Administration and Computer Studies (CABACS) as it celebrates its 55th year of service to the institution.

Since 1953, the college has honed and produced graduates who have been significantly loud and proud in their commitments in their chosen fields. Demonstrative of their efforts to display the instilled Sebastinian values and charisms as they fulfill their roles in social and corporate communities, these distinguished alumni will be honored this coming November.

“Providing job opportunities for the graduating class is a very important function of the SDPC (Student Development and Placement Center)”, says Mrs. Jane Bautista, SDPC Head.

True enough, SDPC as a service-providing unit of the school does not only limit its service to counseling and testing. Last March 6, 2008 the center entertained employment inquiries from about 600 graduating students through different participating companies represented by the recruitment staff who screened and interviewed applicants.
