The course focuses on the development of knowledge and skills necessary for success in composition and other courses that require written language skills. It helps students improve their writing through an understanding of the parts of speech, the mechanics of punctuation, spelling and capitalization.

The subject discusses the active learning strategies and techniques that develop students’ proficiency in interacting with text and lecture material. It emphasizes the cognitive approach to learning the four macro-skills in communication (listening,
speaking, reading and writing) and how they are applied to study skills needed in academic discipline.

The emphasis of the course is on the principles in and properties of effective writing specifically unity, coherence, and emphasis. The students will learn to write by employing different techniques and styles.

This aims to equip the students with substantial skills and trainings geared toward academic and linguistic competencies by emphasizing intonation, articulation, pronunciation, diction, and stress and other standard elements of speech necessary for effectual communication.

The subject introduces the students to the universal scope of literature written in English. It includes selected works of fiction, drama, and poetry written by notable poets, novelists, and playwrights of different ages. Post-colonial societies will be studied in relation to the histories of the societies and the development of the different literary genres.

The course aims to develop the student’s ability to write and deliver different kinds of speeches. It includes a review of the principles of correct breathing, voice control, pronunciation, gesture, movement and enhancement of self-confidence. This course also gives stress on intensifying the analytical and critical
thinking of the students by making rejoinders to the issues concerning the state or verities of society, politics, economics, and life in general.

Through this course, the students will learn to analyze the growth/development of Philippine Literature in English as shown in different literary pieces. It aims to make the students aware of the dominant Filipino traits through a brief survey of Philippine Literature through the discussions of the different selections of Filipino authors.

The course emphasizes on making students skilled business and technical writers able to discern their readers’ needs and have the knowledge of special techniques and nature of business correspondence and technical writing. The course also
aims to prepare the students to write effective reasearch and feasibility.

The subject provides the student’s substantial skills and training necessary for effective argumentation and debate. Emphasis is on the enhancement of critical and logical thinking and reasoning skills of the students through the correct process of argumentation. Application of oral debate is given extensively.

Tatalakayin ng kursong ito ang apat na makrong kasanayan sa mabisa at masining na pakikipagtalastasan pagbasa, pagsulat, pakikinig, pagsasalita at pag-unawa.

Pokus ng kursong ito ang akademikong pagbasa at pagsulat bilang kasangkapan sa pagkatuto. Tuwirang ituturo sa kursong ito ang mga estratehiya sa pagbasa at pagsulat ng iba’t ibang genre ng mga tekstong nakasulat at mga paksang may kinalaman sa kursong na nasa anyong pahayagan, jornal, artikulo, magazine, bagong kalakaran / isyu, karanasan / kaso, atbp., na magiging lunsaran sa pagtalakay sa mga modyul na lilinang sa mga kasanayan sa pag-unawa higit ang kritikal na pag-unawa, gayundin ang kasanayan sa pagsulat ng iba’t ibang sulating akademiko. Magiging batayang paksa ang tungkol sa humanidades at agham panlipunan at agham teknolohiya.

Tatalakayin ng kursong ito ang mga gawaing makatutulong sa mga mag-aaral upang mapaunlad ang kanilang kakayahang kasiningan sa pagsulat at makapagpahayag sa masining na paraan.

ART APPRECIATION
This is a semester course designed to introduce and expose students to the different genres of arts. Limitation of time allows only a cursory study of painting, graphic arts, sculpture, architecture, music, dance, drama, opera, and cinema. Literature, which is one of the arts, is taken as separate course and is, therefore, not taken in detail in this subject.
